BBC Comedy Liverpool Script Development opportunity

Deadline: 9 November 2026

Published: 16 September 2026

The BBC Comedy Liverpool Script Development opportunity is designed to accelerate scripted comedy from targeted parts of the UK. The ambition is to identify and support distinctive regional voices with the aim of developing a returning sitcom that authentically reflects the city’s voice, humour and talent.

The scheme is focused on writing talent from the Liverpool City Region and is funded in partnership with Liverpool Film Office.

To take part, writers must pair with an independent production company. The writer must be originally from or currently based in the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool, Wirral, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and Halton) and all levels of experience will be considered.

The production company does not have to be based in the Liverpool City Region, but we will be prioritising developments from local companies, or companies with a substantive North West base.

What we’re looking for

  • Funny, bold, accessible character-led sitcom ideas with clear returning potential
  • Writers or writer/performers with a strong comic voice
  • Projects that feel authentic to Liverpool, with a clear sense of place

What we’re offering

Script development for five 30-minute original comedy scripts.

At least one script will then progress to further development, the nature of which will be tailored to the needs of the project. This may include:

  • a second script
  • a table read
  • a taster tape or short film

Eligibility criteria

  • Submissions must be from a UK-based production company.
  • The production company must have a proven track record of successfully delivering television, feature film, or short-form productions, across either linear broadcast or digital platforms. Production companies new to comedy are encouraged to partner with an executive producer or production company with experience of making comedy.
  • The writer must be originally from or currently based in the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool, Wirral, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and Halton).

Submissions should include

  • a short pitch (approx. two pages)
  • writer biography
  • sample script or previous work
  • production company overview, including proposed editorial support

How to apply

Next steps

  • Submissions will be reviewed by BBC Comedy, and five projects will be selected by end of November 2026.
  • Selected companies must be available to deliver the final drafts of the scripts by end of March 2027.
  • At least one project will progress to a second stage of development, with further investment.
