BBC Breakfast, interview with Nigel Farage MP, BBC One, 23 June

Summary of complaint

We received complaints from people unhappy with Sally Nugent’s interview with Reform UK leader Nigel Farage MP, and that he was questioned about a £5million gift he had received from a Reform UK donor before he became an MP.

Our response

We believe this interview was conducted in the fair, duly impartial and thorough manner that our viewers would expect from an interview with a political leader.

It was set out at the start of the interview, following Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation the previous day, that Reform UK had called for a general election and the first question put to Mr Farage was why he thought there should now be an election. Mr Farage was doing a series of interviews on several different TV and Radio outlets that morning.

As the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner is still investigating whether Mr Farage broke the Commons code of conduct by not declaring the £5m gift he had received from a Reform UK donor, we believe it was in the public interest to also question Mr Farage about this, and to seek clarification on what the money was for. Politicians are used to a certain amount of scrutiny, and Sally Nugent was conducting her role as a journalist to challenge someone in a position of power and responsibility.

We consider all of these lines of questioning were appropriate, that Sally Nugent treated Mr Farage with respect, and conducted the interview in a professional manner throughout.

Mr Farage was given ample time to respond to the questions put to him.
