BBC Spotlight's Craig Rich talks to the teams
The Ten Tors Challenge is one of the biggest events on the Devon calendar.

FACTS

The first Ten Tors Challenge was held in 1959, when 203 boys and girls took part.

It was organised by three army officers, who felt the moor would provide a great challenge for civilians.

These days, the event is restricted to 400 teams of six people up the age of 20.

Every May, come rain or shine, almost 2,500 young people forsake the creature comforts of home to embark on a gruelling trek across some of the most demanding terrain in Britain.

The Ten Tors Challenge on Dartmoor really is a case of the survival of the fittest...the aim is simply to get to the finish line.

It's not a race, but a test of endurance, self-will and determination.

Over the two days on 15-16 May 2004, the teams must make their way to 10 nominated tors.

There are three courses for the 400 teams of six teenagers - 35 miles, 45 miles and 55 miles, depending on ability.

They'll have with them all their kit, food, tents for sleeping out on Saturday night, and rubbish bags.

There is also the Jubiliee Challenge - a one-day event aimed at young people with special needs, who have a choice of courses over 7.5 miles, 8.5 miles, 11 Miles, and 15 Miles.

The Challenge gets under way on the morning of 15th May, at Okehampton Camp, and the teams must battle through everything the elements and nature throws at them.

In past events, pouring rain, freezing cold, fog, and even extreme heat (!) have all caused problems.

So everyone will be keeping their fingers crossed that the weather behaves itself this time.

We'll be putting up a photo gallery on the weekend of the event - so watch this space.
