"The future health of the Dart is under threat and the problems are widespread," claims Amanda Sherwin, fundraising officer of the Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT).

The Dart starts its long, meandering journey deep within Dartmoor...
"Urgent action is needed to tackle pollution, misuse and the decline in wildlife habitats," she added.

The Trust is calling on the county's visual artists to donate a piece of work inspired by, or of, the Dart which it will then auction to help raise money to fund a project which is helping to safeguard the river's future.

The Dart Catchment Project is half funded by and European Union (EU) grant and DWT must raise the other half to secure and release those funds and keep the project running.

The money that is raised will be used to restore habitats, tackle pollution hotspots and teach people about the importance of water conservation.

Findings from the three year project will help shape the future of river management at a European level.

Amanda Sherwin says the river, which flows from Dartmoor to the port of Dartmouth in south Devon, is a favourite among the county's creative people.

"So many local artists draw inspiration from this emotive and dramatic river and its surroundings.

"This is a great opportunity for people to give something back to help protect the future of this wildlife wonder."

The auction will take place in October, 2005. Any visual artist willing to donate a piece of art to the Devon Wildlife Trust should contact Faye Northan on 01392 279244 or email her at celebartauction@devonwt.cix.co.uk
