Hyde Park Unity Day was initiated by the Hyde Park Residents Association with the mission to :
* create a relaxed friendly and safe environment.
* unite the community and provide an opportunity to highlight the positive aspects of living, working, and studying in Hyde Park.
* demonstrate communities strength through voluntary involvement.
* celebrate cultural diversity through art , music and performance.
* create a focus point for community activities.
* unite and provide opportunities to showcase skills, talent and nature of local people and artists. Hyde Park Unity day 2003 has been a full year in the planning and fundraising. There have been bucket runs down Otley Road pubs, gig nights , car boot sales and a sponsored walk. | | The annual community festival Unity Day event featured much more than just live music and there was something for all the family to enjoy. Take a look at pictures from Unity Day 2004 |
Throughout the day and evening there was live music and entertainment from Leeds bands such as: Liquidhead, Just like Moses, Grass Hopper, Melody Maker, Cardboard Cowboy, New Minds Eye, 10,000 Things and many more. There was also jazz and acoustic from the likes of Sawa Teen, Honeydrum, The Grand Wazoo, Feluka and Jon Gomm on the global rhythms stage. Young skaters and BMX-ers made full use of the all-new skate park at Woodhouse Moor to practice before the Unity Day skateboard competition got underway. A dedicated area next to the skate park, was allocated for invited guest graffiti artists to teach the basics of graffiti art to the locals. For the wannabe thespians, A Play in a Day was rehearsed and performed on stage in the theatre tent. Performances, plays and comedy was on throughout the evening from Dino Casino and the International Playboys of Rhythm. Around the edges o Hyde Park were stalls selling everything from jewellery and clothes to food and drink as the locals enjoyed the sunshine. A huge range of foods from all over the world was there to be tasted. Youngsters were kept entertained by the huge inflatable bouncy castle, face painting and events such as a live dog show and a football competition. Jo and Rosie said: "We come every year as it's dead good and we enjoy the music, we've been here all day and will be back again for the music tonight." Were you at Unity Day?
