See pictures of the Leeds Millennium Tapestry Ten years ago Kate Russell had the original idea for the tapestry. The project faced many difficulties but all the fundraising and hard work paid off and the giant tapestry was finally completed in 2002. Kate Russell says: "I often had doubts that we would ever finish but we did. For me the important thing is not just the final tapestry but the process of making it.
"The project was a training school for the volunteers and many have put themselves in the finished work. Nearly all the people featured in the tapestry are local people.
The panels are:
Civic Pride Local Faces Environment City Leeds in Bloom Community Spirit Sporting Life Lifelong Learning A Picture of Health Pins and Needles One the Move Faith in the City LS2000 City Centre Money Works Pro Rege et Lege |
"This is a piece of work that will last a long time."
Over 2,000 people had a hand in producing the tapestry celebrating Leeds, its people and its history. Millions of tiny stitches were needed to produce the panels adding up to a display around 60 feet long.
Details The panels can be admired from afar as a single piece of work or inspected closely for the many details of Leeds' life.
