The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) surveyed 2,000 adults around the UK to ask them about ways to encourage children to get more involved with classical music.
The research also showed 31% of parents wanted more music lessons where children could listen to music at school, and 30% of parents thought children should be encouraged to play in an orchestra.
Sarah Bardwell, managing director of the RPO, said: "It is clear that more needs to be done to safeguard the musicians and audiences of tomorrow.
"This latest data shows that we need more action at a government level to build more opportunities for young people to enjoy orchestral music."
