Name the Somerset Dragon

BBC Radio Somerset is celebrating Somerset Day 2026 by naming the Somerset Dragon.

We gave you the chance to suggest a name for the iconic emblem on our county’s flag and now we have a shortlist of names.

The four names selected by our panel of judges, which included Somerset-born Hollywood actor James Purefoy and Somerset Day organiser Nigel Muers-Raby, are:

  • Dunkery – Named after Somerset’s highest point, Dunkery Beacon, on Exmoor.
  • Kingston – This name takes inspiration from the Kingston Black, a red Somerset apple used to make cider.
  • Skittles – Named after the traditional game played in pubs across the county.
  • Spitfire – A play on words which is also a tribute to the World War Two aircraft.

You can vote on your favourite between 09:30am on Friday 1 May and 09:30am on Friday 8 May 2026 – but you only have one vote per BBC account, so please choose wisely!

The winning name will be announced on the BBC Radio Somerset Breakfast Show on Somerset Day, Monday 11 May 2026.
