Pete Tong explores the history of dance music from north east England.

Ahead of Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Sunderland, Pete Tong celebrates the rich history of dance music in north east England. In part one of this special, he explores the clubs, artists and sounds that helped shape the region’s legendary nightlife culture - from iconic nights like Shindig to Newcastle’s longest-running independent nightclub, World Headquarters.

There’s a deep dive into the north east’s love affair with Makina as Schak explores the high-energy sound that found a passionate following in the region, alongside music and stories from artists including Olive, Ben Hemsley, Patrick Topping, Trevor Horn, Pet Shop Boys, Karen Harding and L.P. Rhythm.

Plus, a special Radio 1 Dance Rewind featuring a live Essential Mix from Scott Bradford, recorded at Digital in Newcastle in 2006.
