Episode 8
As Natalie faces her final test, hospice care, reflection and a visit to Belfast show this journey may just be beginning.
Nine months after walking into college for the first time, Natalie is coming to the end of her course. There’s an exam ahead, and she’s feeling nervous. She’s fitted this around work, family life and everything else, and now it all comes down to one final test. But this week isn’t just about passing or failing.
A session on end-of-life care brings everything back to her dad. Talking with a hospice bereavement counsellor, Natalie opens up about those last days and what it meant to care for him at home. As she shares her story, hugs and tears follow.
Spending time at Garden House Hospice on placement gives her a clearer sense of what that kind of care looks like day to day. It’s gentle and centred around both the person and the people around them. Natalie meets Kent, who is living with motor neurone disease, and is struck by his positive outlook and the way he approaches life.
In the hospice gardens, families gather for a remembrance service. Everyone there has their own story. It’s a space to reflect and remember, and to be alongside others who understand.
Throughout the series, Natalie has seen the work of people and projects across Northern Ireland. This time, she heads to Belfast to see one for herself. In Stormont, music brings people together - a collaboration that means something different to everyone taking part. For some, it’s about loss, but for others, connection, or simply being part of something. There’s a strong sense of togetherness in the room.
With the exam done and dusted, it’s now a waiting game. When results day finally arrives, Natalie returns to find out how she’s done, alongside the classmates she’s shared this experience with.
Whatever the outcome, this journey has gone further than she expected. It’s taken her back to her dad, opened up conversations she hadn’t had before and shown her the reality of care in all its forms.
And as this chapter comes to a close, one thing is clear - this doesn’t feel like the end of the road for Natalie. It's more like the start of something she wants to keep building on.
