Collaborations and Concertos

Donald Macleod surveys some of Alice Mary Smith’s compositional collaborations, including with the famed clarinettist Henry Lazarus. With guests Ian Graham-Jones and Leanne Langley, Macleod explores Smith’s popular Clarinet Sonata, the first ever written by a British composer, which might have also been fully adapted by Smith into a concerto. They also discuss Smith composing an operetta and church music, and how the publishing industry at the time were keen to promote choral music more than orchestral works.
