Louise Farrenc's Nonet

Sara Mohr-Pietsch plots a musical route towards the Nonet by the French composer Louise Farrenc.

Sara Mohr-Pietsch plots a musical route towards the Nonet by the French composer Louise Farrenc. Farrenc was a widely respected composer in her lifetime but has been neglected since - the success of her Nonet allowed her to insist on being paid the same as the male professors at the Paris Conservatoire. We hear music by other French women composers, including Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre from the baroque period and Lili Boulanger from the twentieth century - and there are pieces by Farrenc's teachers, Johann Hummel and Anton Reicha. Other music from 1850 also features, including Wagner's Lohengrin and Stephen Foster's Camptown Races.
