Joby Talbot's Piedra de sol
In his first concert as the group's new Chief Conductor, Owain Park conducts the BBC Singers in the UK premiere of Joby Talbot's Piedra de sol and motets by Tomás Luis de Victoria.
Owain Park begins his tenure as Chief Conductor of the BBC Singers with the UK premiere of a BBC co-commission by Joby Talbot, Piedra de sol. The work is a setting of excerpts from the epic poetic masterpiece by the Mexican poet and philosopher Octavio Paz and takes the listener on an emotional journey from Creation to Despair and finally to Salvation. In the words of the composer himself, "Piedra de sol invites listeners and performers alike on a journey of infinite dimensions – a voyage whose course bends, advances, recedes, comes full circle and arrives forever."
The concert begins with with two glorious motets by 16th century composer Tomás Luis de Victoria written during Spain's golden age of polyphonic music.
