World Rivers Day - The River Trent

To mark World Rivers Day, Matt Baker and Margherita Taylor explore the River Trent and the land that surrounds it. Once heavily engineered and polluted, the river is now becoming a test bed for new approaches to improving its condition.

At Willington Wetlands, Matt searches for signs that the beavers introduced five years ago have produced new kits and meets a local farmer to see what difference changes in land management can make to pollution and river habitats.

Meanwhile, Margherita follows a project to reintroduce white storks to the Trent Valley, and Joe Crowley investigates what the rapid growth of AI data centres could mean for the countryside.
