Underworld - Second Toughest in the Infants
Underworld go overground with an electronic classic.
Few films tapped into the zeitgeist the way Danny Boyle's Trainspotting did.
Released in 1996, the cinematic adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel acted as a distillation of everything that was happening in mid-90s youth culture, accompanied by a soundtrack that gave a snapshot of the Britpop years.
And if there was a standout piece of music on the Trainspotting soundtrack, it was easily 'Born Slippy'. A pounding club classic, it recounted the hedonistic maelstrom of dance culture, and almost topped the UK singles charts.
It transformed the perception of Underworld from acclaimed electronica act, to stadium sized dance monsters, and if anyone thought they'd be dumbing down their music to fit their new audience, Second Toughest in the Infants was enough to make them think again.
An album orientated work of art, this was the moment where Underworld were recognised as the masters of their craft.
