Tom Service explores two major orchestral works exploring ideas around silence and muting - Stefano Gervasoni's violin concerto Tacet, performed by Ilya Gringolts and the WDR Symphony Orchestra; and Laurence Osborn's Mute, a cycle of 'anti-concertos' in which the solo instruments are 'muted, muffled or distorted', from a recording made by the London Sinfonietta at last year's Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
