Cerys welcomes Grammy-nominated Malian musician Fatoumata Diawara to perform live and chats to legendary Indian singer Asha Puthli ahead of her performance at the London Jazz Festival.

Fatoumata Diawara's music blends Wassoulou traditions with modern influences. She first came to fame through film and theatre before releasing her debut album “Fatou” in 2011 and released her most recent album MASSA in June.

Asha Puthli is a Mumbai-born singer whose career has moved across avant-garde jazz, Indian classical music, soul, funk, disco and experimental pop. She studied Indian classical music and dance from a young age and also trained in Western operatic singing and became fascinated with jazz after hearing it on international radio broadcasts while growing up in India. She moved to New York in 1969 and worked with saxophonist Ornette Coleman, which helped establish her within the avant-garde jazz world.

Produced by BBC Audio for BBC Radio 6 Music.
