Wetherby 31
The bidding is tight at the auction, so can the antiques experts give their teams the edge? Philip Serrell picks something close to his heart.
Wooden shoe lasts are a common sight at antiques fairs, but do you know how they’re made? Natasha Raskin Sharp visits the workshop of cordwainer Payson Muller, originally a stonemason, who turned his talents to making bespoke shoes on hand-carved shoe lasts. He creates them from beech boughs before refining their shape using a knife and rasp.
Hoping to cut a few deals of their own are two teams of bargain hunters, shopping for collectibles at Wetherby Racecourse. In blue are couple Martin and Nasreen, and their opponents are married duo Lisamarie and Jamie. Nasreen’s keen eye spots an ornate Russian caviar bowl and spoon, but the price tag is an eye-watering £600.
Elsewhere, Jamie comes across a wacky glass vase that resembles a famous artist’s work, but Philip Serrell thinks it’s no masterpiece. At the sale, both teams hope for big profits, but all they can do is watch as their items go under auctioneer Caroline Hawley’s hammer.
