Shadow puppets and shamisens

Kathryn Tickell presents the best in folk and roots-based music from around the world. This week, we hear an extract from a Balinese shadow play recorded by Bengali ethnomusicologist and field recordist Deben Bhattacharya, and music from Portland-based duo Seffarine, whose new album traces the musical connections linking Morocco, the Sahara, West Africa and Andalusia across generations. Plus, Shiomi Kawaguchi and Youka Snell of Mitsune, a Berlin-based band breathing new life into traditional Japanese folk music, share three tracks showcasing their chosen instrument, the shamisen.
