6. The Flowerbed

A flowerbed at the end of a platform causes a stir at Leeds train station.

By 1994, campaigning for disability rights had gained real momentum. Protests around ITV's Telethon fundraiser has galvanized the movement. The Rights Now campaign, an alliance of over fifty organizations, is lobbying hard to change the law. Meanwhile, members of the Direct Action Network are in the streets, seeking out opportunities to make headlines through civil disobedience. Gill Crawshaw and Sue Elsegood tell the story of the opening of Leeds Station’s ‘Garden for the disabled’.
