Charlie Hebdo: Two opposing editors discuss pressure to republish cartoons

The Independent's editor Amol Rajan said he believed publishing the Charlie Hebdo cartoons would be too risky in the UK.

He told Today's James Naughtie: "You don't like the idea of self-censorship...but the fact is as an editor you've got to balance principle with pragmatism".

"It would've been too much of a risk to unilaterally decide in Britain to be the only newspaper that went ahead and published".

In the same discussion Peter Huth, editor of the German paper Berlin Zeitung, said he published Charlie Hebdo's cartoon covers to honour the staff of the magazine's braveness.

He added that "journalistically we had to explain to our readers what is Charlie Hebdo".
