US prison documentary highlights the raw power of art
New documentary, Angola Do You Hear Us? explores how a talented playwright awakened a prison population through her art. The film focuses on Liza Jessie Peterson, whose theatrical performance stirred prisoners at the Louisiana State Penitentiary – a prison known as 'Angola' that was built on the site of a former slave plantation. Tom Brook spoke to Peterson and director Cinque Northern at the documentary's recent Telluride Film Festival screening.
