'We had to wear hand-me-down kit from the men’s team’

Argentine goalkeeper Gaby Garton has told Business Daily about the conditions she faced when she signed for one of the biggest women’s football clubs in South America.

She had moved from a Division 1 US college team and was expecting it to be similar.

However she found they were playing on cement pitches, using old kit from the men's team, and receiving their pay two to three months late.

The state of the women’s game in South America is in stark contrast to the men, who are extremely successful on the global stage. Gaby Garton says most clubs in Argentina view women’s football as a “financial burden”.
