Picture postcard

Postcards have always symbolised more than just a holiday greeting: they have documented much of the history of the 20th Century. Now the Bodleian Library has published two books of postcards- one of images from World War I and one of the Russian Revolution. More information at www.bodleianbookshop.co.uk

War effort

The Tsarist government was unprepared for the scale of World War I and in 1916 issued a 5.5% loan to help finance the war. Postcards were produced to encourage people to donate their savings to the war effort.
