The FANY (The Princess Royal's Volunteer Corps) was formed in 1907 to create a first-aid link between front-line fighting units and field hospitals. It is a voluntary organisation and the only female yeomanry unit.
The Corps assists the Military and Civil authorities in times of emergency. During the First World War FANYs drove ambulances in Flanders and manned field hospitals on the French battlefields. In the Second World War, they were drivers, coders and signallers.
Since then, the Corps has specialised in communications. For example, FANYs registered missing people after the Tsunami of 2004 and were called upon by the City of London Police to open the Casualty Bureau after the London Bombings of July 2005.
