The Frames recorded live at the Witnness festival in August 2001. The music world has been in mourning this week following the news of the tragic death of Glen Hansard. Glen first came to prominence as the character “Outspan” in the 1991 film The Commitments but it was as the lead singer of The Frames that he built a cult following in Ireland. His busking origins seemed to imbue his songs and his live performance with a natural warmth, romance and eye-level truth. These same characteristics were ever present in his performance in the 2007 film “Once”. It also showcased his Oscar-winning song “Falling Slowly”. Glen tirelessly supported the music of others from Mic Christopher and David Keenan, to Damien Dempsey and Fergus O’Farrell from Interference. He never left busking behind and busked on the streets of Dublin every Christmas Eve to raise money for charities tackling homelessness. His death this week at the age of 56 has stunned the music community. Tonight, we celebrate his remarkable life with an archive recording of his band The Frames at the Witnness festival in 2001.
