A Schubert tribute

Radio 3 in Concert

Available for 28 days

Pianist Steven Osborne performs music by Schubert in tribute to the late pianist Alfred Brendel. Schubert’s feverish Sonata in C minor D958 was written towards the end of his short life, during a period of great creativity despite increasing illness. His Four Impromptus D899 written around the same time have become musical miniatures at the heart of piano repertoire. Steven Osborne pairs Schubert’s music with works by James MacMillan and Judith Weir. Recorded at the Queen’s Hall during the Edinburgh International Festival 2026 and presented by Stephen Broad. Judith Weir: Fragile Schubert: Allegretto D346 (completed by Steven Osborne) Schubert: Four Impromptus, D899 Schubert arr. Steven Osborne: Liebesbotschaft from Schwanengesang James MacMillan: Lumen Christi Judith Weir: Chorale, for Steve Schubert arr. Steven Osborne: Am Meer from Schwanengesang Schubert: Sonata No.19 in C minor, D958 Steven Osborne (piano) To listen on most smart speakers, just say "ask BBC Sounds to play Radio 3 in Concert".
