Spiritual reflection to start the day with Siȃn Wyn Rees, Bible Society’s Head of Wales. Good morning. Later today, in living rooms across the United Kingdom, people will gather around their televisions, radios and devices to listen to this year’s Last Night of the Proms. Since its establishment in 1895 the BBC Proms has grown into a much-loved and enduring feature of the cultural calendar. The original ambition behind this concert series was a noble one, namely, to bring live music within the reach of a wider audience at an affordable price. Scientists and medical professionals alike have long recognised and extolled the numerous benefits of music for both our mental and physical well being. Music occupies a significant and enduring place within societies across the globe, transcending geographical, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. It has the remarkable ability to bring people together, express a shared identity, and form an integral part of our day to day lives. This power of music is also reflected in faith, where it holds a central role in expressing worship, gratitude, and devotion to God. The Bible encourages us to “Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything.” Music exists to glorify God and serves as a vehicle to worship God here on earth and into eternity. Thank you God for the gift of music and for the joy, comfort, and beauty it brings into our lives. Thank You for the people who create music and for the way melodies and songs can bring us closer to You and to one another. Amen.
