In the aftermath of punk and new wave, pop music smartened up, and got sophisticated. And there's not a finer example of what came to be known as 'sophisti-pop' than Sade's Diamond Life, released in July of 1984. Fronted by Sade Abu, the band combined elegant and effortless pop sensibilities, with a touch of light jazz to create an album that would go on to sell over 10 million copies, and establish her as one of the key voices of the decade.
