Marcia Hutchinson's debut novel The Mercy Step is shortlisted for the Women's Prize for fiction. She spent 20 years writing the story of a 11 year old Black girl. This is the first time an Black African women-owned small press has ever reached a shortlist in the prize’s thirty-year history. The Bradford born author speaks to Karen Gabay about writing and the joy of being shortlsted.
