Roman woman remains found during hospital dig

Available for over a year

A 'remarkable' and 'spectacular' ancient Roman burial has been unearthed in the Essex city of Colchester. The high-status woman was buried in a decorated lead coffin with rare and valuable objects, and centuries later she was found beneath the site of the former Essex County Hospital. Named the "Lexden Lady", the coffin and her remains are due to go on display at the Roman Circus visitor centre for the next year. Picture credit: Colchester Archaeological Trust.
