How Horsforth helped win the war

Hidden West Yorkshire

Available for over a year

The chairman of Horsforth Historical Village Society, Nick Holmes, tells the story of a village raised an enormous sum of money for the war effort. That local effort fed into a much bigger story when HMS Aubrietia helped force U 110 to the surface in 1941, leading to the capture of Enigma material. Decades later, a Hollywood film wrongly credited Americans with that breakthrough. In response, campaigners in Horsforth wrote to the US President, prompting a reply from Bill Clinton acknowledging both the Royal Navy and Horsforth's role.
