James Clarke was a champion swimmer, boxer and water polo player, but it wasn’t his sporting medals that made him a Liverpool hero. Born in British Guiana in 1886, he came to Liverpool as a teenager and went on to rescue dozens of people from the city’s canals, docks and the River Mersey. He also taught local children to swim and helped train Liverpool’s police swimming and boxing teams. Discover the remarkable story of the man behind James Clarke Street.
