A century of London Ambulance History

London Uncovered

Available for over a year

Established on the 1st February 1915, the London Ambulance Service is one of the world’s oldest and largest. In this episode we're finding out more about the LAS Historic Collection, which covers more than a century of ambulance history, including vehicles, uniforms, medical equipment, photographs, documents and personal records. The collection includes the only surviving wartime London ambulance known to have served through the Blitz, and what it reveals about life on London's streets during the Second World War, as well as the forgotten stories of the volunteer ambulance drivers, many of them women, who drove through blackout conditions and bombing raids to rescue casualties.
