Think like a historian

Have a look at the thinking points below and think about your answer to each question. You could even write them down on a piece of paper or discuss them with somebody else if you want to.
Why do you think the Maya’s achievements, such as the invention of a complex calendar system and the idea of zero, are thought to be significant Maya achievements?
Looking at and thinking about the map of Mesoamerica, what do you think caused the Maya to build their cities there?
What effect do you think building their cities within Mesoamerica had for Maya people?
Now that you know that Maya society was complex with different social classes, like commoners and nobles, what similarities and differences can you see between the Maya and how people live today?

You may have thought that it shows how clever and skilled the Maya people were, especially when these ideas still influence how people live today. Maybe you thought that these achievements show how advanced civilisations could be, even without today's modern technology.
Maybe you thought the size of Mesoamerica meant there were plenty of natural resources or plenty of fertile land to grow crops there.
Did you think that as Mesoamerica is so large, trade became important for the Maya? This helped to connect cities but also lead to warfare between them.
Perhaps you thought that people today also have different jobs or roles like the Maya did. You may also have thought that we too have leaders in charge of different places like the Maya did. Maybe you considered that leaders today are chosen in different ways such as through elections, rather than being born into a royal family.
