New Contracting & Payments System

The BBC launched a new system to contract and pay our freelancers, presenters and contributors on 1 April 2026.

This new system enhances transparency across our regulatory processes, allowing us to improve internal checks, comply with all regulatory requirements and ensure all freelance engagements across the BBC Group are handled in a consistent and centralised way. This includes BBC Studios engagements.

What’s changing for me?

If you are engaged on an on an all-rights basis (either behind-camera or on-air), you will see some changes which include:

  • Updated contracts, including updated terms and conditions.
  • You may be required to access the Freelance Payment Portal where you, or your agent, can accept and claim bookings.
  • Requests for additional personal details.

Personal details you may be asked for include:

  • Date of birth
  • NI number
  • Nationality
  • Personal email address
  • Evidence of your right to work in the United Kingdom
  • VAT registration status

This information is required to protect both you and the BBC. For a full list of the key information we require, why we gather it, and how we handle your personal data, click here.

How will I be paid?

Payments will be made in one of two ways:

If you’re engaged on a “show and go” basis you’ll typically be paid automatically once you’ve confirmed your bank details.

However, If you start as a “show & go” contributor, but, subsequently meet one of the below criteria , you will need to register through the Freelancer Payment Portal (FPP) and claim payments going forward. The criteria are:

  • Being VAT registered
  • Being represented by an agent
  • Payments of more than £1000 or seven days’ duration
  • Accumulated approximately £5000 in a rolling 12-month period
  • Already being registered on the Freelance Payment Portal (FPP)

If your payment has been processed via this route, you will receive two emails

  • The first email will confirm your terms and conditions (from bbchr@bbc.co.uk).
  • The second email will contain a secure link from Docusign, where you will be asked to enter your bank details (this only needs to be completed once).

Once you have submitted your bank details, payment will be made within three to five working days. During this time, you will also receive a remittance advice confirming the payment for the work completed.

Other related information including VAT registration

  • The Freelance Payment Portal (FPP) is the online system that most freelancers and agents use to view and accept their bookings for the BBC.
  • For more information about registering and navigating the FPP, please click here. Please note, if you already signed up to the A&C Portal via BBC Connect, you can use your existing login details on the FPP login too.
  • If you are an agent representing a contributor please follow the How to guide for agents here
  • If you are a contributor not represented by an agent please follow the how to guide here.
  • If you have not received an invitation or registration email for the FPP please log a ticket with our support service desk.
  • If you are VAT registered you will need to enter your VAT registration number on the FPP and select the appropriate boxes here before submitting your claim. This ensures the VAT is added to your payment before submission.

If you have already registered for the FPP or the A&C portal you access it here.
