| | These six 25 minute documentary programmes explore people's connection with different locations in the two counties. Producer Howard Belgard talks about what's in the programmes. |
 | | | So in the first programme, which was the last to put together, I tried to break down my preconceptions about the project and discover a little more about this phrase which has come to dominate the last 12 months of my life. | | A map of Herefordshire and Worcestershire |
I looked at a map of Herefordshire and Worcestershire and for no particularly scientific reason I decided to travel to the four furthest corners of the two counties and speak to people who lived right on the borders.
It was fascinating to hear how other people had a strong "sense of place" which was completely different from my personal interpretation.
The ideas ranged from a man in Presteigne who could see iron railings that he’d made in the town and had stood there for decades. That made him feel proud that he’d affected his immediate environment.
A woman in Broadway loved the peace in her garden, it was her Sense of Place because it was the place that made her feel "like a good person." Which is probably one of the best definitions in the whole series.
In the North East of Worcestershire I met a group of people who’s Sense of Place wasn’t physical but cultural. They’d formed a Black Country society which gave them a sense of belonging that they hadn’t found from any particular location.
Another bonus from following the borders around the two counties was the incredible range of accents and dialect that I discovered on my journey.
The episode also includes tasters of the five forthcoming programmes.
