I wanted to contrast Mary’s very personal testimony with someone who was more outgoing and who was in a "different emotional place" . It was then, I thought of the paintings of David Prentice

David wasn’t born in Malvern but has made it his home. His work is sold all over the world and for many people his paintings of the hills have captured the feeling of the area far better than any artist before him.

As I’ve said David is a landscape painter and as such you wouldn’t have thought there were a great many psychological "issues" attached to a genre which only deals with the environment.

However if you listen to the programme I think you’ll be surprised by what he has to say about the view that he paints. I was hoping that I could give the listener the feeling that they were eavesdropping in on a conversation between two people who never actually met.

Although I think what Mary says about her father is very moving and David’s thoughts on his painting are fascinating I feel I slightly missed the mark with this one. If I’m honest (and this will sound vaguely pretentious dahling) I was hoping that by juxtaposing and intercutting the two monologues a third feeling/meaning would magically appear - it didn’t and that’s my fault.

But hey I played them to Peirs Plowright who is the godfather of all documentary makers and he felt this one was the best of the lot, so what do I know?

So that’s the lot - 6 documentaries all very different and very enjoyable to make. Its not up to me say whether they’re any good or not, I’LL leave that up to you. And if you’re feeling like telling me I’d be genuinely interested to know what you think.
