England set a new record for hottest June day for the third day in a row, with a provisional temperature of 37.3C in Santon Downham.
However, no other nations broke their records.
The mercury in Wales peaked at 35.1C in Hawarden, in Scotland, the highest temperature today was 29.2C in Eskdalemuir, and Northern Ireland stayed slightly cooler, peaking in Katesbridge at 25.6C.
The heat caused widespread disruption, with at least 1,400 schools across England and Wales fully or partially closed today, several train services were delayed or cancelled and a wildfire in the Peak District affecting around 200 hectares of land before it was brought under control.
Countries in mainland Europe felt the pressure: Germany and Spain experienced their hottest June days, France announced alcohol sales bans in Paris and the Netherlands issued a code red extreme heat warning for the first time.
Tonight, there remains a red warning for extreme heat across London and parts of the south until 21:00. Yellow thunderstorm warnings are in place in northern England until 21:00 and for Scotland overnight.
It's going to be another scorcher in the south and south east of England tomorrow, with an amber heat warning in place until 21:00 on Saturday.
