- The King addressed the Scottish Parliament and said it gave him the "greatest pleasure" to mark the new session
- He said the parliament stood as a powerful expression of Scotland's democratic tradition
- King Charles added that the people of Scotland looked for leadership to address the challenges we all faced
- He welcomed the "local heroes", nominated by each MSP, who he said should take pride in their achievements. The King and Queen went to meet them after proceedings in the chamber came to a close.

- In response, First Minister John Swinney said Scotland was a nation "born of multiple identities"
- Swinney stressed the need for Scotland's people to work together but pointed out that the country had the capacity to absorb and overcome every passing storm
- MSPs and the royal couple were treated to performances by the National Theatre of Scotland's Lyceum Youth Theatre, the National Youth Choir of Scotland and the NYCOS BSL Youth Choir
- They also heard Let This Hall Be full of Noises from Scotland's Makar Padraig MacAoidh and Ae Fond Kiss performed by Ellie Beaton and Rachel Groves
