Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career in numbers

- Published
Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he has played his last ever World Cup game.
23 years after making his debut, the Portugal legend's 233rd game for his national team ended in a 1-0 defeat to Spain, knocking them out of the tournament.
"I am sad to leave like this but I have given everything, always given my best," Ronaldo said. "I go with a clear conscience. This is football, it is the life of a footballer. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. You have to carry on. It was my last World Cup, yes."
Ronaldo said he would not make a decision on his club career yet: "As far as the rest of it is concerned: there will be time to think, to be with my family, [I will] not make decisions in the heat of the moment."
Despite ending in disappointment, he departs as the only man to have scored at six World Cups, so we have taken a look back at his career on international football's biggest stage...

Oldest player in a knockout match

At 41-years-old, Ronaldo is the oldest player ever to appear in a Fifa World Cup knockout match and the second-oldest player to score in a World Cup game.
Portugal's game against Croatia was the first match in World Cup history to feature two outfield players (not the goalkeeper) who were at least 40-years-old.
Ronaldo played against Croatia's Luka Modric who is 40.
Youngest and oldest goalscorer

Ronaldo played his first World Cup game 20 years ago at the age of 21.
He scored his first tournament goal at 21 years and 132 days.
He is Portugal's youngest and oldest goalscorer in Fifa World Cup history.
Just one of a few footballers to hold this honour for their country.
The other two are Lionel Messi of Argentina and Michael Laudrup of Denmark.
Six World Cups

Ronaldo has played in six World Cup tournaments in a row - 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026.
He has also scored in all six tournaments.
The other player to feature in each of those tournaments is Lionel Messi - but he didn't score in 2010.
11 goals

Ronaldo has scored 11 goals across six World Cups.
This is a record for Portugal.
Only one of his goals is during a knockout game, when he scored a penalty against Croatia during this 2026 World Cup.
He has scored four penalties during his World Cup career, equaled by Gabriel Batistuta, Rob Rensenbrink, Eusebio and Lionel Messi.
146 international goals

Ronaldo has scored 146 international goals for Portugal.
This total includes other tournaments, like the Euros and the Nations League.
He holds the record for the most career goals scored in men's international football history.
Ronaldo may not have won a World Cup, but following Portugal's defeat by Spain he claimed the Euro 2016 win was just as "significant".
