Sibelius' Kullervo from the Baltic Sea Festival
Alex Humphreys introduces an afternoon of great music-making, including highlights from the Baltic Sea Festival and chamber music from the East Neuk Festival.
Alex Humphreys presents an afternoon of exclusive music-making from the UK and beyond. From the Baltic Sea Festival, we hear Sibelius’s dramatic Kullervo, inspired by Finland’s national epic, the Kalevala, and telling the tragic story of its doomed hero. There’s also early music from the award-winning period-instrument ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro, joined by countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński.
Continuing the Baltic connection, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra perform Shostakovich, while Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s Greater Antiphons is performed by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Vasily Petrenko.
From the East Neuk Festival, the English Concert Winds perform Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, while pianist Christian Zacharias brings together music by Couperin and Poulenc.
