Haydn's 'Farewell' Symphony

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and conductor Johanna Malangre perform symphonies by Haydn and Shostakovich. Before that, the concert opens with Joan Tower's bracing Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, inspired by Copland's famous fanfare, and is followed by the powerful music of Margaret Bonds with her work written in response to the civil rights movement, The Montgomery Variations. Haydn's Farewell Symphony is a quietly theatrical work, with the players famously leaving the stage one by one, and the concert ends with Shostakovich's spirited Ninth Symphony.

This concert links to Key Changes: Radio 3's Essential History of Classical Music. The themes covered in this evening's concert - Protest, Power, Revolution and Resistance - are explored across the series, presented by Gillian Moore, as musical history is charted alongside key historical events and societal changes.
