Mahler's Tenth Symphony

Antony Hermus conducts the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in a concert shaped by questions of mortality, memory and transcendence.

The programme begins with Willem Jeths's Mors Aeterna, a work whose title translates as 'eternal death'. Rich in atmosphere and reflection, it serves as a compelling introduction to the concert's central themes.

At the heart of the programme is Gustav Mahler's Symphony No 10 in F sharp minor. Left unfinished at the composer's death in 1911, the symphony survives as a remarkable testament to Mahler's final creative vision. By turns intimate, turbulent and visionary, the symphony charts an extraordinary emotional journey, from the searching opening Adagio to a hard-won and luminous conclusion. Performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Antony Hermus, this concert brings together two works that contemplate endings while reaching towards something beyond them.
