Episode 1
When a family home in an affluent suburb of Glasgow is deliberately set on fire, detectives race to determine who attacked the young couple staying there, and why.
On New Years Eve 2016, 23-year-old university student Cameron Logan and his girlfriend, 24-year-old journalist Bex Williams, are celebrating the new year. After partying into the small hours at a friend’s house, they walk home together to Cameron’s family home in an affluent suburb of Glasgow, where they were staying overnight. In the early morning of 01 January, Bex and Cameron wake in terror with their bed on fire, and, within seconds, flames have engulfed the entire room.
Telling her story fully for the first time, Bex Williams recalls the horror of those initial moments. Crawling through the smoke and flames in search of a way out, she tries to escape through the kitchen but discovers the back door is locked. In a remarkable act of ingenuity, she opens the freezer and puts her head in - just before losing consciousness. Cameron’s parents are woken by the chaos and manage to escape with minor injuries, and Bex is pulled to safety and rushed to hospital. Cameron’s older brother Blair returns home to find his family home overcome by fire, with firefighters and police already at the scene.
This is just the beginning of the horror story for Bex and the Logan family, as Cameron has not made it out alive. Once the fire is brought under control, detectives and forensic experts begin to examine the scene. What initially appears to be a devastating house fire soon takes a sinister turn. Inside the property, investigators discover the unmistakable smell of petrol, and Cameron’s mother says she saw a masked figure throw something into the living room where Cameron and Bex were sleeping, before fleeing the property.
Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team is now faced with a murder investigation and a baffling question: why would anyone target this family? With the clock ticking, the team begin to meticulously piece together the evidence from the scene and build a picture of the events of that night. With no obvious motive, detectives must follow every lead as they try to understand what really happened inside this family home.
Meanwhile, Bex is in intensive care fighting for her life and is put in a medically induced coma. As soon as she wakes, detectives are keen to speak to her. Did she witness what happened and who the masked figure was?
