
Reaction to Tanzanian president John Magufuli’s death

Reaction to the news that Tanzanian president John Magufuli has died at the age of 61. His death follows weeks of rumours concerning his health, with the president not having been seen in public since the end of February. Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced live on state television that Mr. Magufuli had passed away at a hospital in Dar es Salaam, due to heart complications.
We hear how Tanzanians in different parts of the country, including the late president’s home town of Chato, are responding to the news.
Meanwhile, opposition ACT Wazalendo party leader Zitto Kabwe says the vice president must be sworn in promptly, to avoid constitutional uncertainty.
