The Padres finish things off quickly as pitcher Griffin Canning secures the last three outs.

The Diamondbacks leave San Diego disappointed. They have missed out on the play-offs by a small margin on the final day.

Padres to win it all as long as their starting pitchers can provide some quality starts. If not us, anyone but the Dodgers.

Welsh Padres fan since I was 11, hoping for our first World Series this year! The team even helped me study Sports Journalism at Uni!

Cannot believe the Phillies caused me that much stress this past week but that was a post-season worthy performance. 162 games and it came down to the very last. Wheeler - top class once again. Time for Red October!

The Padres are going to take the win on this final day with the fight seemingly finally going out of the Diamondbacks.

A single from Austin Hays brings home Dustin Harris and Ty France to make it 9-4 in San Diego.

  5. Astros book final post-season placepublished at 22:48 BST 27 September

The Houston Astros are the final team to confirm their post-season place after the Texas Rangers lost 6-4 to the Minnesota Twins.

That means the Astros have won the West division in the American League and are heading to the Wild Card.

It also means the post-season picture is complete.

The Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians advance to the American League Division Series and the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers are straight through to the last eight in the National League.

In the American League Wild Card the Chicago White Sox will travel to the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees will host the Boston Red Sox.

In the National League Wild Card the Philadelphia Phillies will go to the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs will meet the San Diego Padres.

Fermin single brings home two runs for the Padres

Just as the Phillies were closing out victory to end the Diamondbacks season, the Padres have been adding insult to injury by looking to finish them off in this final game.

Diamondbacks replacement pitcher Justin Martinez walks four batters in a row to give up a run and leave the bases still loaded.

Freddy Fermin then singles to bring through two more runs with Luis Campesano and Austin Hays scoring.

The Padres now lead it 7-4 in San Diego.

The Phillies made it very difficult for themselves in recent weeks but they have got it done and clinched the final Wild Card spot in the National League.

They have closed out a 7-3 win against the Tampa Bay Rays to seal the deal despite heavy run falling in Philadelphia towards the end of the game.

That means the Diamondbacks have missed out regardless of what they do against the Padres.

The Phillies are going to the post-season.

Phillies fan praying for a win, but with our recent slump doesn’t look good if we do make the Wild Card round.

    Paul in Northampton

The Phillies look like they are just going to squeak through for you Paul. Once you're in the post-season anything can happen.

Astros limping into the play-offs thanks to the monster season Yordan Alvarez has had. No idea where they would have finished without him!

    Andy in Watford

The Astros lead 6-0 against the Athletics right now and with the Texas Rangers also losing that is more than enough for the Astros to make it through to the Wild Card.

  9. Diamondbacks score to go levelpublished at 22:07 BST 27 September

Diamondbacks score third run in seventh inning to level it up

There is a reason they are known as the kings of the fightback this season and the Diamondbacks are doing it again here.

A third run in the seventh inning comes from a Lars Nootbar single to score Tim Tawa.

The problem is that things are not going to plan in Philadelphia. The Phillies have a 7-3 lead with just three batters left for the Rays.

  10. Diamondbacks score twice!published at 21:59 BST 27 September

Arenado scores on a Corbin double

The Diamondbacks are not giving this one up and at the top of the seventh the fightback is on!

Nolan Arenado leads off with a double before Corbin Carroll does the same to send Arenado home and make it 4-2.

Then a single from Tim Tawa is enough for Carroll to make it home from second base too.

The Diamondbacks are now within one run. They still need something special from the Rays against the Phillies, but at 7-3 that game could just about still swing in their favour.

  11. Padres score!published at 21:50 BST 27 September

Fermin double makes it 4-1 to the Padres

The Padres respond immediately to restore their three-run advantage.

Freddy Fermin arrows a ball beyond third base and into the corner for a double to bring Austin Hays home from third base.

Snakes Alive? Diamondbacks get one back

The Diamondbacks are hanging in there.

Jordan Lawlar starts things off with a single in the sixth inning before stealing second base and reaching third on a groundout from Lars Nootbaar.

That sets it up for Ketel Marte to bring Lawlar home with a line drive to right field.

The Snakes need a massive swing still, but you never know.

France adds third run for the Padres

A third inning in a row with a run for the Padres as they extend their lead again.

A groundball from Ty France gets through the infield this time allowing Dustin Harris to score from second base.

Meanwhile the Phillies have added to their lead over the Rays and are 7-1 up in Philadelphia.

"Holy Sheets" - Gavin doubles Padres lead

Things get harder still for the Diamondbacks as the Padres add another run.

This time it comes from the bat of Gavin Sheets, who launches a home run to centre field as the first batter up in the inning.

The Padres are sailing into the post-season in good form as things stand, but unless something changes the Diamondbacks are missing out.

Padres score first on an RBI single from Manny Machado

The Padres strike first at the bottom of the third inning.

Sung-Mun Song gets on base with a walk and the Padres manage to advance him to third at the cost of two outs.

Manny Machado then steps up with a line drive single to left field to drive in the run.

Things are not going as they need to for the Diamondbacks either in San Diego or in Philadelphia, where the Phillies have a four-run lead over the Rays.
