People do all sorts of strange things to raise money for Children In Need - but setting up your own Big-Brother-style house has to be one of the oddest.

Staff at Specsavers Opticians in Hereford though have found that this is a very successful way to fundraise, and are well on the way to their target of £10,000.

THE HOUSEMATES
  • Mandy Louis
  • Martin Treanor
  • Karen Webb
  • Mandy Counley
  • Soo Poole
  • Emma Rocke
plus Gary Cheshire as Big Brother

The staff have been sleeping in their place of work all week, and to make it even harder they've had to sleep on the floor, an airbed being considered a luxury item that has to be earned.

In the best traditions of Big Brother the housemates have been given a number of tasks to perform.

At stake is their food for the evening, with the best getting a pizza and the worst a tin of soup.

THE TASKS
  • Complete a 500 piece jigsaw while wearing very heavy gloves
  • Memorise a very complicated collage
  • Compete to see who can clock up the largest number of laps on a Scalextric model car racing circuit
  • Make a costume out of scraps of old clothes for one member of staff to wear on Friday

Sleeping in the shop every night has not been without its thrills - one night they were awoken at five in the morning by the Police shinning lights in through the window!

The staff have been taking things very seriously, and have so far raised over £8,000.

Big Brother, aka Gary Cheshire, has been very strict: the two people who'd come bottom in the tasks were sent out on the first night of late night shopping to see who could raise the most money in 20 minutes.

For the record they raised £63 and £120.

On Children In Need day itself the opticians will be dressed as musketeers and the rest of the staff as children's heroes.
