BBC Around the World

The new world

The future we face is very different from the past. The media landscape in the UK and around the world is changing – increased regulation,

new players and, above all, phenomenal technological change. We need to plan for the future to ensure the BBC continues to deliver value to our audiences and society.

The digital age

The digital age heralds a new era of rapid change. In the past, technological advances were gradual and people had time to keep up. Since the 1990s, there has been an explosion of technological change and there is no sign of it slowing down, as the diagram below demonstrates.

The audience response

Our audiences everywhere will have different levels of comfort with this pace of change. We need to play a leading role in developing digital Britain, and in delivering global value, to ensure our services are accessible on all platforms, and audiences are comfortable using the new technologies.
