Islanders are being encouraged to take on board advice to prevent wildfires throughout the summer season.

The Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) and Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services (ACLMS) said even a small spark, hot ember or discarded item could quickly lead to a damaging fire.

The fire service said it was particularly focused on avoiding fires starting on the cliffs and in coastal areas which were vulnerable to flames spreading particularly fast.

David Hubert from ACLMS said the countryside was "one of the Bailiwick's greatest assets" and it could take years to recover from a wildfire.

He said: "Fires can cause lasting damage to habitats, wildlife and landscapes which may take years to recover.

"By working together and taking simple preventative measures, we can all help protect these important spaces."

GFRS chief fire officer Les Britzman said many wildfires were preventable.

He said: "We are asking islanders to think carefully about how their actions could impact the countryside and surrounding communities, particularly during periods of prolonged dry weather.

"Taking a few simple precautions can make a significant difference."
